Rancher's Diary- transformation

All my life I have loved horses and wanted to live in the country...figuring that it would never happen. I took what I saw for horse life for granted....go to the barn and find the horse already saddled and waiting...ride whenever and just return the horse where you found it...everything else was spectator. My friend Tracy called me a "Factory Rider" now I'm a real horse person with all the responsibilities and every day is a learning day and it makes me so excited that I have to share. My main thing now is to give her love and care and to earn her respect.

I believe I told you she is a rescue horse. I got her from a lady in town who took her from a man ...who said he loved her....but was only feeding her once in a while ...as it was a choice between her or his family. Me there is no choice if it comes to that make the decision BEFORE you starve the poor thing. She was way underweight probably under 700 lbs by far. Susan got her back to health and did what was necessary to make her rideable again . I haven't done the weight thing yet but am sure that under her winter coat she has a little more fat. I'm also not sure what she should weight but Susan said she needed another 150 lbs. Right now she is getting used to me and her home. She needs to know she is safe and sound here and that there will be food every day. So it should be a good bonding for us. Jim has been helping with hay but it is me who feeds them and the primary care giver. I am just so amazed that with what she went through she is still so well mannered and gentle. She isn't passive as she will chase Molly from her food and she had to do this at Susan's as she was pastured with four others one of which was a very pushy 4 yr old mare. She doesn't antagonize Molly though and they get along well in the pasture..just the food.. They still eat side by side at the fence and now do it calmly with Molly finishing first and heading for hay so they are learning manners from each other.

I guess yesterday and today have sinched me being a farm girl as I met the blacksmith all bundled up no make-up and today I went out at 6:55 AM in my PJ's my new (what I call) Nanuck hat to feed......Nanook of the North.....furry hat with flaps similar to what you would see in winter shots from the far North., have no idea what they are called but very warm. Oh yes and warm lined barn boots. What a site!
Nothing like the old me who didn't come to breakfast without full hair and make-up done. LOL Have times changed.similar to this hat
